FS Erskine is a custom typeface developed in collaboration with illustrator Jimmy Turrell, inspired by Newcastle’s Byker Wall.

Type Design: Krista Radoeva
Creative Direction: Jimmy Turrell
Foundry: Fontsmith
Client: It’s Nice That

FS Erskine is an experimental typeface I worked on during my time at Fontsmith. The idea was to create a typeface inspired by Turrell’s hometown, and he opted for the Byker Wall, a council estate in Newcastle, North East England where he grew up. The final font is has over 1,000 glyphs, including 5–9 alternative shapes for each character, as well as different levels of texture, and an additional layer of colourful geometric forms. They are set on a ‘bouncing baseline’, switching automatically as you type to give a feeling of randomness.

FS Erskine was awarded a D&AD Wood Pencil for Type Design and Typography in 2019.
